Synopsis

On November 1, 1954 near Ghassira, a small village in the Aurès Mountains, a couple of French teachers and an Algerian caïd were the first civilian victims of a 7-year war that would lead to Algeria’s independence. More than 50 years later, Malek Bensmaïl returns to this Chaoui village, known as the birthplace of the Algerian Revolution, to film, through passing seasons, the inhabitants, their school and their children. Between present and past, this film reveals the reality of Algeria as moving and complex, abundant and contradictory.

  THE DIRECTOR
