Synopsis

Back from a shoplifting expedition, Osamu and his son pick up a little girl who seems to be alone. At first Osamu’s wife dislikes the idea of taking her in for the night, but agrees to look after her when she sees that her parents are mistreating her. Osamu’s family eke out their low wages with petty crime but seem to be living happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals their worst secrets.

Born in Tokyo in 1962, he made Maborosi, which won the Venice Golden Osella. Seven of his films were selected at Cannes: Distance (2001), Nobody Knows (2004), Air Doll (2009), Like Father Like Son (2013), Our Little Sister (2015), and After the Storm (2016). Shoplifters won the Cannes Golden Palm.
