Qiao is in love with Bin, a local mobster. During a gang fight she fires a gun to protect him. She gets a five-year prison sentence for this act of loyalty, and when she is released she goes looking for him to pick up where they left off.

Jia Zhang-Ke was born in Fenyang, China, and graduated from the Beijing Film Academy. In 1998 he made his first feature film Xiao Wu. Platform (2000) and Unknown Pleasures (2002) were selected in competition at Venice and Cannes. Still Life won the Venice Golden Lion Award in 2006 and his latest film, A Touch of Sin, selected at the 2013 Cannes Festival, won the Best Screenwriter Award.
