Synopsis

Malagasies who rose against the French authorities in Madagascar in 1947 were called fahavalo (enemies). Film-maker Andriamonta- Paes introduces us to the last living witnesses, who recount their fight for independence and the long months of their resistance in the jungle, armed only with spears and talismans.

Marie-Clémence Andriamonta-Paes is French and Malagasi. In 1988 she set up Laterit Productions, making The Whistle (2004, As Thiam), Mahaleo (2005, Paes and Rajaonarivelo) and Ady Gasy (2015, Nantenaina). Fahavalo is the first film she herself directed.
