Synopsis :

Statement of intent :
I envisage the editing of this film, like the experience of filming, where each meeting is a single, specific story suspended out of time. I shall cultivate the out of sight. What you can't see extends understanding to other horizons.

 

Hassen FERHANI

Hassen FERHANI (DIRECTOR)
Hassen Ferhani was born in 1986 in Algiers, where from 2003-2008 he CO-ran the Chrysalide Film Club. In 2006, he directed his first short film, The Bays Of Algiers, selected in official competition at several international festivals. In 2010, he co-directed the documentary Afric Hotel, shown at Visions Du Réel and in 2013 his third short film Tarzan, Don Quixote and Us was selected there and at FID Marseille. He worked as assistant director with names such as Lyes Salem, Malek Bensmail and Karim Moussaoui. In 2015, he directed his first feture documentary In my head, a round about - Golden Tanit for best documentary and best first feature JCC 2015.


Narimane MARI (PRODUCER)
Narimane Mari has since 2006 produced documentaries for companies as well as her own films : Loubia Hamra (2013) and The Madmen's Fort (2017). The last two productions of prize-winning documentaries were Hassen Ferhani's In My Head a Roundabout (2015) and Djamel Kerkar's Atlal (2016).

Synopsis :
After 62 years together, my grandparents separated. Both were born in Algeria and arrived in France in the 1950s; both have lived for sixty years in Thiers in the Auvergne. This is a story of exile, of disintegrating ties, of the suffering and pride that deeply marked my grandparents and an entire generation of Algerian immigrants in France.

 

Statement of intent :
The film transports us into worlds that never meet. I shall film the distance that separates people, territories. We shall move from Aicha to Mabrouk, from the world of women to that of men, from images of the present to those of the past, from the Auvergne to Algeria, in a constant oscillation.

Lina SOUALEM (DIRECTOR)
Lina Soualem, a French-Algerian-Palestinian director and actress and Sorbonne graduate, specialises in the study of contemporary Arab societies. She started a journalist, then she moved into films. She was programmer of the Buenos Aires Human Rights Cinema Festival and the Latin Arab Festival and then the Palest'In & Out Festival, Paris. Now Paris-based, she is assistant director and writer on documentary projects.

Synopsis :
Hala has to face her suicidal thoughts alone since her husband, who always rescued her, has been sent to jail. She is struggling to deal with society as nobody understands or accepts what she's going through. She has to figure out how to deal with life and everyone around her in order to be there for her family.

 

Statement of intent :
I made a film about the idea of loss and how one can surprisingly find an inner strength to deal with it. How a normal person who's emotionally fragile can cope with such incomprehensible emotions as anxiety and depression that lead to suicidal thoughts.

Hisham SAQR (DIRECTOR)
Hisham Sagr was born in Cairo in 1987. He has more than 10 years' experience as an editor in the Egyptian film industry. Saqr has worked with a number of acclaimed Egyptian directors, most recently with Ahmad Abdalla on the award-winning Rags and Tatters (2013), Microphone (2010), for which Saqr won the award for best film editor at the DIFE. He also edited Al Batout's Winter of Discontent which earned Saqr a best African editor nomination from the African Film Development Foundation. Certified Mail is his first feature film.

Jessica Khoury is an established distributor specializing in independent world cinema. Synopsis :
A ruthless sniper on Haifa Street in Baghdad kills a man who walks into the neighborhood. He prevents anyone from retrieving the corpse with the threat of gunfire, causing a chain of events that will reveal the tragic truth about the main character's relationship to the deceased.

 

Statement of intent :
My film Haifa Street is an attempt to contextualize and understand those ten minutes, in which lescaped from deadly sniper bullets. Nine years later, questions still haunt me: Who was the deceased? Why was he killed? And many more. But like all Iraqis, I have no answers. With my film, I want to expound on those intense minutes that reeked of death.

Mohanad HAYAL (DIRECTOR)
Mohanad Hayal is a graduate of the Baghdad Faculty of Fine Arts and Cinema. After working as assistant to Mohamed Al-Daradji and Oday Rasheed he made the short films City Heart, Wrong, Furat and Screenplay. He works for the Iraq Independent Film Centre and his film Happy Birthday was selected for the 2013 Berlinale.

Hala Alsalman is a Dubai-based Iraqi-Canadian film-maker. Her fiction film Bêtes humaines, a multi-genre short film set in the Montreal subway, was nominated for the prestigious Canadian Gemini Award and premiered at the 2012 Newport Beach International Film Festival.

Ali Raheem was born in 1988 in Baghdad, Iraq. He studied cinema at the Baghdad University College of Fine Arts; since 2003 he has run the Iraqi parliament's media department and worked in many Arab and Iraqi networks. His last short film was Life In Darkness and his first long documentary (2012) Balanja. He has produced both documentary and fiction films, the last being Haifa Street, and worked as producer for a documentary series, Heroes of Iraq. A Home of One's Own is a story of one generation as internalised by another. The way defeat and exile shape personal journeys is explored through two women. The film evolves in a process that resembles the evolution of my own consciousness at a time of severe loss. I am improvising with fragments of my memories to reconstruct a self within time.

With an MA in Documentary from Goldsmith's College, London University, Ruba Atiyeh has produced plays on the theme of displacement and identity for second-generation immigrants. She produced and directed documentaries for Aljazeera Documentary Channel and other commissioners. She teaches at the Lebanese University and is. researching geography in film. She is now producing two features (fiction and documentary) on place and identity for emerging directors. She has designed drama workshops and written/acted in plays for which she received awards. Since 2013 she has made documentaries, biographies and two personal shorts Salute Comrade and Let Me Stand Alone. She teaches documentary film-making and has mentored emerging film-makers, some of whose first features she is producing and she's also a member of the documentary jury at the Emmy Awards.

Nadim Mishlawi is a lebanese composer and film-maker. He made his directorial debut with the documentary Sector Zero (first documentary prize at DIFF 2011, Berlin Art Prize for Film and Media Arts 2013). Over the past 15 years, Nadim's projects have ranged from film to art installations. In 2011 he was nominated for best Original Score at the Aubagne International Film Festival for his work on the film Stray Bullet. In 2006 he co-founded the sound studio db Studios. He currently teaches sound art at Alba University.

Reham is a Syrian student at the University of Arts, Berlin. When she is kicked out of her room for not paying the rent in time, she moves from one place and one friend to another. As the money she has saved runs out and she begins to realise that nobody can help her, her living conditions worsen. Nevertheless, with each new place she enters and each new character she meets, she discovers a new and unsuspected part of herself.

This film questions the notions of stability, focus, ownership, and this through the story of my own experience in the streets of Berlin, as well as those of various other people. This film whose aesthetic oscillates between fiction and documentary aims to achieve a visual reality capable of delivering the emotions of the main character.

Reham ALKASSAR(DIRECTOR)
Reham Alkassar is a 25-year-old actress and director born in Damascus. After graduating from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, Acting Department in Syria, 2014, she travelled to Germany to continue her Master studies in Spatial Strategies at the Berlin Weissensee School of Art. She participated in a wide range of works as an actress. Besides her main performative work she has also done work as a dramatic consultant and instructor in several actor training workshops. Her first experiment with film was the writing and directing of the short film Toi, Toi, Toi in 2015, Berlin, followed by the documentary film Tent in 2016, Damascus.

Hala Bdier was born in Amman in 1992. In 2014 she took a BA in Acting from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, Damascus. She acted on stage and in films, the most recent being the short films Sama (Dubai, 2017) and Kabbout: Spare Parts (Amman, 2017). She made some experimental films like Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg? (Amman, 2013) and the short documentary Grey (Damascus, 2016). His short films were shown in Luxor, Zanzibar, CinemAfrica, BlackStar and other various international film festivals. He is in post-production of his 3rd short film Rockabye and his debut feature film Nameless.


Yuhi AMULI (PRODUCER)
Yuhi Amuli is a Rwandan film-maker. He made his first short film Ishaba in 2015. The film was made with support from a South African production company Urucu Media, the Swiss Fresh Prod and Mashariki African Film Festival and was screened in various film festivals including Luxor, Amiens, Vue d'Afrique, Lausanne, etc. Akarwa is his second short film made in 2017. Synopsis :
Ali is an old tailor from Tunis who spends his time looking for a buried treasure in an underground gallery in his house. One day, he finds himself stuck with his wife and children under the rubble, after the collapse of their home. That's when he must learn to take care of them by taking them to the underground shelter. He must fight and look for a way to save them before it's too late.

 

Statement of intent :
The film paints the portrait of Ali, a father whose destiny is boring and flat. And for a good reason: his modest condition of tailor's assistant doesn't help him to free himself from the weight of everyday life, or find a way out of his needy condition. It's therefore necessary for Ali and his family to go through a painful ordeal, through the experience of cloistering, so that their vision of life changes.

Majdi Lakhdar was born in Tunis in 1987. He studied writing and directing at ISAMM Institute Tunis and graduated in 2009. He has directed three short films and acted in several others. With his first feature film Before it's too late, he participated in several writing workshops and development programmes: Beyond Borders 2010, Sud Ecriture, La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde, Grand Nord.


Mohamed Ali BEN HAMRA (PRODUCER)
Mohamed Ali Ben Hamra, born in Sousse in 1986, graduated in Cinema Engineering and Means of Communication from the Turin Polytechnique. He is founder and managing director of Polimovie International Pictures, which has to its credit four feature fictions, including Mahdi Hmili's Thala Mon Amour and Elyes Baccar's Tunis By Night, three documentaries, and eight short films. He is a member of the Producers Network, EAVE and TorinoFilmLab.
